Key Individual Tax Deadlines for January 2026

As the new year unfolds, it's crucial to keep abreast of vital individual tax deadlines that January 2026 brings, including estimated payments, tip reporting, and tax planning. It's time to strategize and prepare efficiently for what's due.

Kick-off Tax Season - January 2

January marks the onset of the bustling tax season. If you haven't scheduled your tax preparation appointment yet, it's advisable to secure your slot soon before the calendar fills up entirely.Image 2

Report Tips to Your Employer by January 12

If you're employed in a role where tips supplement your income and you've received more than $20 in tips during December, you must report them to your employer no later than January 12. This process can be facilitated using the IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement bearing your signature, alongside your name, address, Social Security number, and the details of your employer including the name and address. Additionally, specify the month or period the report concerns and total tips received.Image 3

Employers are responsible for withholding FICA taxes and income tax from these tips. In scenarios where your regular wages fall short of covering the FICA and tax withholding, the employer will document the amount of any uncollected withholding in box 8 of your W-2 for the year, which will need to be paid upon filing your year's return.

Individual Estimated Tax Payment Due by January 15

This marks the deadline for making your fourth-quarter estimated tax installment payment for the 2025 tax year. To sidestep a penalty for late payment, ensure you either pay your estimated tax by January 15 or file your 2025 return, settling all tax dues by February 2, 2026.Image 1

Remember Weekends & Holidays:

If any tax deadline coincides with a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date automatically rolls over to the next business day that doesn't fall on a legal holiday.

Extensions in Disaster Areas:

Note that if your geographical region is designated as a disaster area, certain due dates may be extended. To verify disaster area designations and applicable filing extension dates, visit the relevant resources: FEMA and IRS.
