Key October 2025 Tax Deadlines: Don't Miss These Dates

October ushers in cooler temperatures and crucial tax deadlines. If you're among those who opted for a 6-month extension, October 15 is your final opportunity to file your 2024 Form 1040 and settle any outstanding taxes—be sure not to overlook this critical date.

October 10 - Reporting Tips to Employers

Employees with tip-based income need to act promptly if their monthly tips exceed $20. By October 10, ensure you report your September tips to your employer using IRS Form 4070. Your employer will then calculate FICA taxes and withhold income tax from your regular wages. If your wages fall short of covering these withholdings, the uncollected amount will appear in box 8 of your annual W-2. You'll need to address this when filing your annual tax return.

October 15 - Taxpayers with Foreign Financial Interests

If you were granted an automatic 6-month extension to report your 2024 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, note that October 15 is the due date for Form FinCEN 114 submission.

October 15 - Individual Tax Filers

For those who received an automatic 6-month extension for their 2024 income tax return, it's imperative to file Form 1040 and make any necessary payments for taxes, interest, and penalties by this date.

Weekends & Holidays:

If any due date coincidentally falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline automatically shifts to the subsequent business day, not classified as a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions:

Bear in mind that tax deadlines are extended for regions marked as disaster areas. To ascertain whether your area is affected and to know the specific extension dates, refer to these resources:
