March 2026 Tax Calendar: Critical Dates for Individuals

We are officially one month out from the big April filing deadline. Whether you are enjoying the early spring weather in Scottsdale, watching the snow melt in Denver, or enjoying the desert bloom in Albuquerque, the reality of tax season is setting in. At GeneralCents Accounting, we want to ensure you navigate this final stretch without stress.

Here are the specific dates you need to mark on your calendar for March 2026.

March 10: Reporting Tip Income

For our clients working in the service industry or hospitality, tracking income is a monthly discipline. If you received more than $20 in tips during February, you must report them to your employer by March 10. This applies to cash tips, credit card charges, and tip-sharing arrangements.

You can use IRS Form 4070 or a simplified statement that includes:

  • Your name, address, and Social Security number.
  • Your employer’s name and address.
  • The month or period covered.
  • The total tips received.

Why the rush? Your employer needs this data to handle FICA and income tax withholding correctly. If your regular wages can’t cover the withholding, the uncollected amount will pop up in Box 8 of your W-2, and you will be responsible for settling that difference when we file your annual return.

March 16: The Scheduling Sweet Spot

Consider this your friendly nudge from your BackPocket CFO. March 16 marks roughly one month until the individual filing deadline. If we haven't secured a slot on the calendar for your tax preparation yet, now is the time to reach out.

Don't Wait for Perfect Records

A common mistake we see is clients waiting until they have every single receipt organized before calling us. Please don't let perfectionism delay your process. If you are missing a few documents, go ahead and schedule the appointment anyway. We can review what you have, create a punch list of missing items, and keep the ball moving. It is much easier to forward a missing 1099 later than to fight for an appointment slot in early April.

The Strategic Extension

If life has been chaotic and you are worried about the deadline, remember that filing an extension is a valid strategy, not a failure. It buys us time to ensure accuracy. However, we still need to prepare a preliminary return to estimate any tax due to minimize interest and penalties. We can handle the extension filing for you once we have that estimate.

Standard Rules & Disaster Relief

As always, if a due date lands on a weekend or legal holiday, you get until the next business day. Additionally, specific extensions often apply to regions designated as disaster areas.
