October 2026 Individual Tax Due Dates: What You Need to Know

October brings a few critical tax deadlines for individuals, marking the end of the line for those who filed extensions earlier in the year. Whether you are finalizing your extended 2025 individual income tax returns, reporting foreign financial accounts, or managing monthly tip income, staying on top of these dates is essential.

At GeneralCents Accounting, we help our clients across Scottsdale, Denver, and Albuquerque navigate the tax calendar so nothing slips through the cracks. Here are the key dates you need to know for this month.

October 13: Reporting September Tip Income

If you work for tips and brought in more than $20 during the month of September, you are required to report that income to your employer no later than October 13. You can use IRS Form 4070 to handle this, or you can provide your own signed written statement. If you choose to write your own, it must include your name, address, and Social Security number; your employer's or establishment's name and address; the specific month or period the report covers; and the total tips you received.

Once reported, your employer is required to withhold FICA and income taxes for these tips directly from your regular wages. Occasionally, your regular paycheck might not be enough to cover the full tax withholding. When that happens, your employer will report the uncollected withholding in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will then be responsible for paying that uncollected amount when your return for the year is filed.

October 15: Extended Individual Tax Returns

For individuals who requested an automatic 6-month extension to file their 2025 income tax return, time is up. You must file Form 1040 by October 15 and pay any remaining tax, interest, and penalties that are due.

October 15: Foreign Financial Account Reporting

October 15 is also a crucial day if you hold financial interests overseas. If you received an automatic 6-month extension of time to report your 2025 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury, this is your deadline to file Form FinCEN 114.

The Rule for Weekends and Holidays

When tracking tax due dates, the calendar sometimes creates conflicts. If a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is automatically extended until the next business day that is not itself a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Filing Extensions

Deadlines can also shift in response to severe weather or emergencies. When a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, tax due dates will be extended.
