Where’s My Money? Tracking Your Federal Refund Status

If you have already filed your return and are waiting on those funds to hit your account, you aren't alone. As your "BackPocket CFO," I know that cash flow matters, whether it’s for your business or your personal savings.

As you may have noticed, the IRS has aggressively shifted toward electronic transfers, moving away from the old days of waiting by the mailbox for a paper check. This isn't just about saving paper; it is about security and speed. Direct deposits reduce the risk of mail theft and get money into your hands much faster. For those without traditional bank accounts, the IRS has even introduced options like prepaid debit cards.

Using the "Where’s My Refund?" Tool

Once your federal tax return is filed, the waiting game begins. Fortunately, you don't have to guess where you stand. The most reliable way to track your money is the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website.

Whether you are a client in Scottsdale, Denver, or Albuquerque, the timeline is generally the same. If you e-filed, you can check your status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. For the few who still file paper returns, the wait for data is about four weeks. Keep a copy of your tax return handy, as you will need to enter exactly what is on the form:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The specific tax year (2025, 2024, or 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., married filing jointly, single, head of household), and

  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars.

Understanding Your Status

Once logged in, you will see one of three stages:

  • Received: They have your return and are working on it.

  • Approved: They are prepping your payment and will give you a deposit date.

  • Sent: The money is on its way to your bank (allow up to 5 days for it to clear) or the check is in the mail (allow several weeks).

Mobile Options and Accessibility

For those managing finances on the go, the IRS2Go app offers the same tracking capabilities for Apple and Android devices. Additionally, Where’s My Refund? is fully accessible for visually impaired taxpayers, compatible with the Job Access with Speech screen reader and Braille displays.

When Should You Call?

Here at GeneralCents Accounting, we often get asked if calling the IRS speeds things up. Generally, the answer is no. The online tools are updated every 24 hours—usually overnight—so checking more than once a day won't change the result. However, if the tool indicates a specific problem, or if it has been more than 21 days since you e-filed without an update, that is when we should look closer.
